October 21 2012
So as I'm going through this blog I realized I haven't posted what happened that lead up to me having him so early. So on October 20 I was at work and around 8 pm I started feeling cramps but I didn't think anything of it cause I just figured it was him getting bigger or moving around. They kept persisting and getting much worse through the night. Every couple minutes I would get these sharp pains that would last 30 seconds to 1 minute. Flash forward to Sunday the 21st. I didn't get any sleep the night before cause of the cramps but I tried to forget about it cause we had a big day ahead of us. My sister Holly and her husband Brandon were in town with their two kids visiting before moving to Missouri. We had plans to go to my moms house in Tooele about an hour away to spend the night. So I got up and started making French toast. I was living with my brother Matthew and his wife Sarah at the time and my other brother Robert had spent the night. Holly and Matthew took Robert to my dads house and my cramps were so bad I was laying on the floor in the Kitchen. This next part is a bit TMI. I had to go to the bathroom and I lived in the basement so I gingerly walked down the stairs and went to the bathroom. There was blood all over my underwear and in the toilet so needless to say I was panicking thinking I was having a miscarriage. So I walked back upstairs and told my Brother in law that I needed to get to the hospital right away. So we rushed outside but he realized he didn't want to get blood on his seat so he grabbed a towel first lol. I can laugh about that now. My Sister in law stayed at the house with the two kids and called Holly to have her come back as soon as possible so she came back with Robert so he could stay with the kids. Meanwhile me and Brandon get to the hospital and they took me to triage to see what was going on. They hooked me up to the monitor and the monitors didn't show any contractions even though clearly I was having them. Brandon stayed with me until Holly and Sarah got to the hospital. The rest is a bit hazy but I remember the doctor coming in and checking me out and saying they have to get Kayden out as soon as possible I had already lost a lot of blood and Kayden wasn't getting enough oxygen. Thirty minutes later I was having an emergency C-section. Holly stayed with me the whole time during surgery and I remember being so tired and wanting to fall asleep. The nurse said it was ok so I passed out and when I woke up I was still in that room and Holly wasn't there so I asked the nurse where she was and the nurse told me she went to see if Kayden was ok. When she came back she said he tried to cry and they were working on keeping him alive. She told me that he weighed 1.10 lbs and was 13 inches long. I wouldn't have made it through that day if it wasn't for my family. Holly was my life saver that day I don't know how I would have made it through surgery without her. I remember as they were getting me ready for surgery asking her why this was happening with tears in my eyes so scared for my babies life afraid I wouldn't be strong enough for the months and years to come. She just kept saying I don't know I don't know trying to be brave for me. It turns out I had something called placenta abruption where the placenta tears away from the uterus. What's crazy is thinking that if we had left to go to my moms I would have been on the side of the road dealing with this and it could be a very different outcome.

Today Kayden had his shunt surgery but after they started they were trying to reposition him and the vent came out of his mouth so they had to hurry and put it back in. They decided to close him up and start again in a couple days cause they didn't want him to get an infection.

crib
So Kayden has been in his crib for a few weeks now and he is doing amazing keeping up his body temperature. He is now 4.14 lbs and growing every day. The nnp says he will have to stay past is due date but thats ok cause that just means hes getting the care he needs and we can handle it. On Monday he is going in for surgery to get a shunt placed I guess the reservior isnt doing the job fast enough. It makes me sad that my baby boy has to go through another surgery but I am so glad that he is still here with us and fighting as hard as he can to stay here with his mama. He is a brave strong little boy and I feel so blessed to have him in my life. I dont know when he will be coming home but Im hoping by my birthday so we will see. Here are some pictures I took of him in the crib and in some of his preemie clothes. I tried to upload pictures but it wouldnt let me and Im on my way to the hospital so when I get back tonight I will mess with it and figure it out.

kayden
Hey everyone my sweet baby boy has been doing pretty good these last few days. He has his ups and downs but overall doing really well. There is a chance he might have to go into surgery again the reservoir is working on the left side of his brain but not the right. I don't know what that means exactly yet but I will keep everyone posted. With babies as small as Kayden was when he was born there is a chance they will get retinopathy of prematurity. With Kayden's first eye test 2 weeks ago it looked good but he had a test last week and there is a mild case of retinopathy of prematurity. They are just gonna keep watching him and doing eye tests to see if it improves or gets worse. If it does get worse he might have to have eye surgery which is scary for me to think about. I'm really trying to stay positive about all this but I break down a lot and have a hard time handling it all. I'm just glad my baby boy is still here and fighting to stay here with me. He is the best thing to ever happen to me. He got to meet Santa the other day which he loved. He will be 2 months old on the 21st here are some recent pics and I'm also posting a picture from the day he was born.

awesome little boy
I know its been a while since I have posted anything on here its been pretty crazy since Kayden got transferred to Primary Childrens. The surgery went really well and they have been taking fluids from his brain since Monday. It doesn't hurt Kayden either which is good. His breathing has been much better since they started taking the fluids. I'm trying to decide if I should have him transferred back to Mckay Dee or keep him at Primary Childrens. Right now he weighs 1160 grams which is about 2.9 lbs. He is a wonderful little boy who is the light of my life and I am getting so excited with the idea of when he comes home. Here are some recent pics of my little man.

Today, Kayden was transferred to Primary Children's hospital. His brain bleeds didn't resolve as they had hoped so he needs surgery. First they will put a reservoir in to see if that helps and if it doesn't he will get a shunt. Here's a picture of them getting him ready to transfer.

amazing
Kayden is doing so good right now. He is back on my milk 100%. They took the iv out of his arm and his oxygen is at 24% which is amazing. He is such a strong little boy and definitely my miracle. I love that baby so much. I held him today and the last couple days and I can tell he loves it when he is out of the incubator. I am so proud of him and I love it when he opens his eyes.

ultrasound
Kayden is doing pretty good lately. His pneumonia seems to be clearing up. His oxygen levels are still going up and down. They did start his feedings again which is good so I need to make sure I'm pumping more often. My brother Matthew and my dad gave him a blessing yesterday which was neat cause Matthew was able to see him for the first time. Now for the main reason for this post. They did an ultrasound on his brain today and there are no new bleeds. The bleeds he has in his brain are resolving and starting to decrease. Which is really good news. I'm so proud of Kayden. When something bad happens he does a good job of getting over it. He is a very strong little boy.

better day
Today is a better day for Kayden. He's doing much better today. I know I haven't updated this in a couple days but basically he had air in his stomach. He also had secretions in his lungs that they thought might be an infection. They started removing the secretions and were able to get rid of the air and he improved. They did stop his feedings until they get rid of the infection so he's back on the iv fluids and TPN machine. It seems like lately he isn't moving forward too much. The nurses keep assuring me that this is just something that happens with these micro preemies cause at times he will have more forward steps than backward. I'm just glad he's getting better. He's a good boy and so sweet I just love him so much.

three weeks
I went to see Kayden yesterday for his three week birthday. He is doing much better now. He is still on the vent but it's helping him alot. He is completely off the iv fluids right now and only taking my milk. I am so proud of my baby boy he has gotten so much better and keeps improving. I know this is a long and bumpy road with setbacks but I also know Kayden is getting the help he needs right now. Here is a picture I took of him today.

lots of tears today
The last couple days have been pretty hard on Kayden. He's having a hard time breathing on his own, they had to switch him to a different machine to help him breath better. When he has his apnea spells his heart rate goes down. His hemaglobin levels were pretty low today mostly due to the fact that hes a preemie so they gave him a blood transfusion. Once he started getting the blood his breathing was a bit more stable and his heart rate for the most part stayed above 145. They were thinking he had an infection but the tests and the xray they ran both showed normal so hopefully its just that he is tired and needed more blood. It breaks my heart to see him go through this. Please pray for my little angel. He is so pure and a precious beautiful gift from god.

skin to skin
I got to hold sweet Kayden today and we did skin to skin contact. It was amazing getting to hold him like that. Just feeling him touching my skin was awesome. I could tell he liked it too. He is doing so good they keep going up on his feedings. Right now he is at 4.0 mil every 3 hours. I love him so much he is a very special boy. Here are some pictures of me holding him.

good news
They did an untrasound on Kaydens brain today and they said the bleed went down a little bit on both sides. Its hard to explain it all but its good news. They also did an echo on his heart and the hole in his heart that was causing the murmur has closed. The doctors are hopeful for Kayden from the results and he just looks good and is keeping my milk down and he isn't getting sick either. Here is a picture of him holding my finger.

good day
Kayden is doing good today. They started his feedings again and his infection went down so they took him off the antibiotics. They have been laying him on his stomach lately he seems to really like that position. He looks so cute on his stomach. I love that little boy so much.

A little better
Kayden is still sick and on the antibiotics but he looks better and it looks like hes handling it. I just hate that my baby boy is going through this. It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about him being sick. Heres some pictures they took a couple days ago for Halloweeen.
bad mom
Well I went to see Kayden last night and I helped with his cares then I asked if I could hold him. The nurse was hesitant at first but when I told her I got to hold him the night before she said ok. I should have listened to her cause now my baby boy is sick. I'm not sick but I'm sure taking him out of the incubator is what got him sick. He is back on antibiotics and they have stopped his feedings. I feel so bad it's making me sick to my stomach and sooooo worried for my baby. I swear this is the hardest thing I have ever gone through or will ever go through. It's a nightmare having your baby in the nicu like this.

Beautiful baby
I went to see my special little guy today. I was there for 4 hours. He is doing so good right now. I got to change his diaper today and he started pooping while I was changing it. His stats are all the same so far. He is such an amazing little guy. I got to hear him cry for the first time too. I felt bad that he cried but it was such a beautiful sound to hear just to know he is doing what babies are suppose to do. Here is a pic of me holding him. yay

My big boy
I went to see Kayden along with Sarah and Holly. My baby is doin so good. He gained 2 oz he now weighs 1 lb and 7 oz. They took him off the ventilator that was in his mouth. He is hooked up to a canula that is another form of a ventilator. His jaundice came back so he has the lights back on him. My son is doing so awesome. I really think all the prayers are helping and they are much appreciated. He was moving around alot today because he is not sedated anymore.

ventilator???
I talked to my baby's nurse this morning and she said he did very well again last night. I am so excited 2 nights in a row with no seizures, his heart rate is still in the 160's, and his jaundice has gone away for the time being that might come back though. They are lowering the settings on the ventilator and he is adjusting his breathing accordingly. They had to do a blood transfusion and they are waiting to see how he takes that before they take him off the ventilator. He is completely off his antibiotics they are just gonna watch for signs of the infection to come back. So all in all he is doing really well. The nurse said it is amazing that they are gonna take him off the ventilator considering his age and size.
Second update for today
Just a quick update. My mom and I went to see Kayden today, we were there for 2 1/2 hours. They were unable to take him off the ventilator yet, he didn't respond as well as they hoped he would but they are still hopeful that it will happen soon. While we were there, they fed him some of my breast milk. It was the first time he had my milk I'm glad I was there to see that. His blood glucose levels had come down which is good so they can give him some sugar and hope he starts gaining weight. It was really nice being there with him for a couple hours this time. I love that little guy more than I can explain or express. Here is a picture I took with my moms hands on his head and feet.
First post
This was my first official blog post when I had Kayden.
Scary first 5 days
I had my beautiful baby on October 21, 2012. I named him Kayden Christopher Delgado. He was born at week 26 and only weighed 1 lb 10 oz. I love my baby boy so much. I went into labor because I had placenta abruption. I had to have an emergency c-section which went ok. They then rushed my baby to the NICU and started checking him out. That first night things went ok but they did an ultrasound on his brain the next day and found a grade 4 brain bleed on the right side and a grade 3 bleed on the left side. He was born with an infection which the doctors think might have caused his early arrival. The infection has since gone down and they are thinking of taking him off the antibiotics. He is on a ventilator and hooked up to machines and tubes. His breathing is getting better they are thinking of taking him off the ventilator and putting him on a sipap. These first 5 days have been very hard but my little man is a fighter. As long as hes gonna fight to stay alive I am gonna fight and do everything I can to keep him alive. I truly believe he is a gift from god and I will treat him as such. I will update my blog every day of this fight if I can.
All about Kayden
I started a blog three years ago when Kayden was born and for some reason I can't figure out how to continue that blog. So I decided to start a new blog about Kayden and his life so far. I will put the dates the stuff happened in the blog. Thanks for reading. Kayden is the light of my life and the best thing that has happened to me. My life was going nowhere before him. Some of the images I will post aren't easy to look at. Here is a picture the day I had him.
